Need some help deciding on a wood species for your project?

  • That depends! It's entirely up for discussion which wood is the best for your specific project. Some woods do better than others for specific use cases. For example, let's discuss cutting boards vs. charcuterie boards:

If you wanted to be able to prepare food on a cutting board, you'd want a wood that is hard enough to stand up against repeated knife cuts, such as Oak or another species with a higher Janka rating. For a decorative charcuterie board, serving is the larger purpose. Aside from the occasional cheese knife, fewer cuts would be made and a softer but still durable wood is sufficient. So its up to you which species you like the look of best!

  • The Janka Hardness Scale is the internationally recognized rating system for wood species hardness and durability. It was designed specifically for determining which wood species are best for hardwood flooring but has many applications throughout the hardwood industry since hardness is essential for durability. The traditional scale ranges from 0-4000, the higher the rating the harder the wood and less susceptible to wear and tear.

  • It absolutely does! The type of wood you select comes down to personal preference but there is much to keep in mind when selecting one. For instance there is of course your specific use case as mentioned elsewhere but your aesthetic and what you want the piece to look like in your space.

Another reason to consider which species to pick is of course, price point. Each speicies of wood comes with a different price, which reflects a multitude of factors in terms of workability, sustainability, and cost to source. Each of these factors plays a part in how much it costs to work with each species and then the direct relation to the prices you see here in the shop. You may choose to go with one wood option over another solely based on the price and that's valid!

  • Yes you can. Wilbert's Workshop stocks specific species of wood for a range on each project. These are chosen with the use for each item in mind. I weigh sustainability, ease of access, and pricing to select the best types and quality of woods for your project.

However, if you want a specific type of wood that isn't listed on my site currently, please just ask! I will do what I can to accommodate any requests within reason and help you create the best product possible.
